RACE

Super Aguri F1's Takuma Sato produced another fantastic result in the Canadian GP. In a race that saw half of the field retire, Taku produced the drive of his career as, in the nail-biting last laps, he overtook the two Toyota cars and defending world champion Fernando Alonso to claim sixth place and once again come home in the points. Taku is now equal eleventh in the drivers’ championship, taking SAF1 to joint seventh place in the constructors' table.

Takuma Sato:

“What an awesome weekend for us. So many things happened during this race I was really worried about what happened to Kubica and, when I heard he was okay, I felt relief and I would like to say a big thank-you to the Formula One safety team. After that accident, I then tackled the racing. It was a real mixture of competitive racing and safety car situations and our strategy worked well. At one stage, I came into the pit because I saw an opportunity immediately after safety car was deployed and the pit-lane was still open. The team knew and was on hand straight away. During the last few laps, I had a great feeling because I was able to race with the frontrunners and I was able to confidently overtake and take back my position. This was absolutely the most beautiful day in my racing career and is an amazing result. A huge thanks to the guys today and all the people who support us."

QUALIFYING

Overnight showers in Montreal made for difficult track conditions on Saturday for Super Aguri drivers Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson, but both completed trouble-free practice programmes happy with the balance of the SA07.

A red flag situation at the start of the afternoon’s qualifying session meant a change in strategy for the remainder of Q1, but Taku went comfortably through to Q2 and will lead the Honda-powered teams from eleventh place at the start of the Canadian Grand Prix.

Takuma Sato:

“ I am pleased with the result and we are in a very good position for the race tomorrow. We were expecting to have a tough weekend in Canada, as our circumstances make it difficult to fully update the car as much as we would like to. However, we made good progress during the practice sessions and a good step forward once again, so I am pleased that the car showed good performance and that it all came together today. Hopefully, we can have a strong race tomorrow. ”

PRACTICE

The Super Aguri F1 team made a solid start to its Canadian Grand Prix weekend, with both Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson making good progress in the SA07 around a ‘green’ Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, taking eleventh and tenth places respectively in morning practice, before, with more rubber down on the track in the afternoon, finding a comfortable set-up and improving on their fastest laps within the large group of drivers closely matched in the midfield.

Takuma Sato:

“ It was an encouraging day. At the beginning, we struggled a lot with grip and tyre behaviour as the track was green and dusty, so it was difficult to get a good lead from the car because it was sliding a lot. The track improved quickly so, by the end of the first session, we had a good idea of which way we should go on car set-up. In the afternoon, we built up our programme step-by-step and, by the end of the session, I believe we were in a comfortable position. However, we still have quite a lot of work to do overnight and hopefully the weather and track conditions remain the same for tomorrow. ”
